A Beer that Tastes Like Spiced Wine?

Posted by Chris on April 9, 2008

Beer is good. Spiced wine is good. If only the two could be mixed…

Bob of the Bob Woodshed Beer Blog reviewed Unibroue Queleque Chose from Unibroue brewery. The brewery recommends that the beer be drunk hot or on the rocks.

That’s right! On the friggin’ rocks! Yeah, I know.

Here’s Bob’s review finale:

That was officially the most unique experience I have had thus far with a beer. Warmed is definitely the way to go, but I can also see how some people would prefer to drink this over ice. I honestly can’t think of a beer even remotely similar to this, so kudos for Unibroue for trying something unique. If you’re a fan of hot spiced wine, give this a shot.

I will be on the lookout for it. Enjoy!

Update… I found Unibroue Queleque Chose at Whole Foods Markets and tried.  Interestingly, my thoughts about the beer are basically exactly the opposite of Bob’s.  I think over the rocks is definitely the way to go and did not really like it warmed.  It tastes more like hot cider to me than mulled wine but that might just be semantics. On the rocks, it’s great and Ela really loved it.

Overall, I definitely like Unibroue Queleque Chose (on the rocks, anyway) and would recommend it to anyone. I whole-heartedly agree with Bob that Unibroue deserves kudos for trying something unique.

It’s National Mulled Wine Day

Posted by Chris on March 3, 2008

It’s March 3rd!  Today is National Mulled Wine Day - the biggest wine event of them all!

Unfortunately, it has yet to become a bank holiday but we are working on that.  Ideally, it would be a day when children still have to go to school but grown-ups can stay home and enjoy mulled wine. :)

Share a mug of the warm spicy stuff with a friend or loved one this evening. It just makes you feel good - too much might have the opposite effect, though.

If you want to learn more about National Mulled Wine Day…

The Nibble’s take on National Mulled Wine Day includes a little mulled wine history.

Cooking by the Seat of My Pants brings up the fact that mulled wine was requested by George’s Guardian Angel, Clarence, when they were at the bar - good moment for mulled wine.
This is a list of American Food and Drink Holidays - just interesting.

If you want to celebrate National Mulled Wine Day a day or two late, you can always buy mulled wine mix online.  We offer overnight shipping.

Mulled Wine in the Hot Tub

Posted by Chris on February 29, 2008

Sarah of “What’s up with ELM” (and also the owner of ELM) wrote this article about her cool day at the snowshoe event with the ELM members.  ELM (Equilibrium Lifestyle Management) is (first, a really cool idea) “a fitness and lifestyle management group based in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, BC. [whose] mission is to assist you in achieving your vision of living a healthier and more balanced lifestyle.”

Back to the mulled wine in the hot tub…

Snowshoeing

After a day of showshoeing at Forbidden Plateau, the members of ELM enjoyed a nice dinner together and had mulled wine in the hot tub.  This definitely goes into the gluhwein moments list - and I think I will add it to wine events as well.

I know most of our readers are from the US but check out ELM.  It seems to be a great group to bring out your inner courage and zest.

der gluhweinbecher means gluhwein mug

Posted by Chris on January 24, 2008

der gluhweinbecher means “gluhwein mug” in German.  gluhweinbecher

I have always enjoyed the multitude of instances in which the German language combines multiple words together to make up word that describes the object. You can see what I mean and learn more German words at the CAPL (Culturally Authentic Pictorial Lexicon) site.

CAPL is an interesting project to help people learn and translate German words using text and “culturally authentic license-free imagery.”  Here’s the page for wine.

Enjoy!

How to Make Mulled Wine Videos

Posted by Chris on January 16, 2008

I just ran across this great video about making mulled wine from scratch produced by Expert Village Videos. It is broken into its various components from ingredients through serving and all the little details between. The production quality is nice and it is hosted by professional chef,  Brandon Sarkis.

Please also see our video on how to make mulled wine using gluhwein mix (bottom of page), which was made in my kitchen one evening in one take. We’ll improve that one later.

Enjoy.

The GLUE Wine Effect

Posted by Chris on January 11, 2008

Maybe gluhwein should be called “GLUE-wine.” Gluhwein is such an integral component of the holidays in Germany and brings so many people together it has become a tradition in itself. It’s effect is spreading to other parts of the world as well. It has been popular throughout Europe for centuries and Americans are slowly being introduced to it as well.

I love this Rourke McNamara’s post about the German Christmas markets and gluhwein and the celebrations had when people bring them together.

Everywhere Gluhwein was sold there was also a crowd of people huddled together in warm coats sipping from steaming mugs.

You might say gluhwein is the glue that holds the Christmas markets together. Enjoy!

Party-Sized Mulled Wine Recipe

Posted by Chris on November 18, 2007

Woohooo!!! This is a recipe big enough to serve the whole party! In all fairness, I think they are cheating with the addition of all the orange juice but I still like it. Praise be to Cook and Entertain Recipes for the party-sized mulled wine recipe.

1 bottle of Biltmore Red Wine (can use a merlot)
½ gallon orange juice
½ lb. Brown sugar
1 tsp. Cinnamon
¼ tsp. Nutmeg
¼ tsp. Allspice
¼ tsp cloves

I hope you enjoy it. Don’t hesitate to invite us to the party. :)
