Mulled Wine Prevents Hangovers

Posted by Chris on September 7, 2008

More research is needed to confirm the headline but I think it can be done. Anyone want to chime in?

Kate of “What Katy Did…” tells of her, um, research into how mulled wine might prevent or, at least, not cause hangovers. I have done research that ended with quite the opposite result but I am still exceptionally interested in what she has to say about the subject. Ok, maybe her discover should be classified as something more like accidental than researched.

Either way, it’s a good account…

I had a very weird experience on Sunday morning: I awoke without a hangover… Having supped the previous night on a concoction of champagne, white wine, red wine, mulled wine and some suspicious clear liquid that appeared in a cup by my chair sometime shortly after 2am I was prepared for the worst.

Mulled Wine Gravy

Posted by Chris on April 2, 2008

ok, this is just plain interesting. I have never heard of mulled wine gravy and it strikes me as one of those “don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it” recipes so here it is in all its dark rich glory from Rubyberries Recipes.

Mulled Wine Gray

Serves 6
Preparation time 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1tbsp plain flour
  • 300ml Asda mulled wine
  • 300g pot fresh chicken stock

Method

1 Remove all but 1 tablespoon of fat from the turkey’s roasting tin and place on the hob over a medium heat. Stir the plain flour into the turkey juices and cook for 1 to 2 minutes.

2 Remove from the heat and gradually pour in the wine and chicken stock, stirring constantly. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 minutes until the gravy thickens. Season to taste and strain into a warmed jug.

Please please please let us know if you try this.

Interested Gluhwein Tipple Tidbit

Posted by Chris on March 5, 2008

Professor FUFU-U posted this bit of knowledge last week and I thought it should be shared. The professor may have been indulging in gluhwein a little when he wrote his Mulled Tipple.

Einstein drank gluhwein? Probably a lot of it.

Glühwein is usually prepared from red wine, which is heated and spiced with cinnamon sticks, cloves, walking sticks, sugar and string. …. The oldest Glühwein tankard is documented and attributed (*) to the high noble German and first Riesling grower of the world, Count Tippler IV of Katzenelnbogenbogey around 1420, (see above painting).

Admittedly, the addition of walking sticks and strings makes me question the rest but it seems viable enough. It’s on the internet, right?

Good stuff.
